Career Advancement With Higher Education Abroad in Pavement Engineering

Dr. Uma Maheswar Arepalli is currently working as an assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, SRM University, Andhra Pradesh. He is also associated with the University of Maine, USA, as a faculty affiliate in the civil engineering department.

Dr. Arepalli graduated with a bachelor’s degree from SRKR Engineering College, Bhimavaram, received his master’s degree from IIT(BHU) Varanasi, and a doctoral degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), USA. He worked as a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Minnesota Duluth, USA, and as a research engineer in the Bureau of Project Development at the Maine Department of Transportation, USA.

He is currently a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Maine, USA. He is also a founding director of a recently established start-up firm, “Applied Research Professionals (ARP) Pvt Ltd”, a research process outsourcing (RPO) business model for agencies in USA, Canada, and India.

Dr. Arepalli has a well-rounded professional work experience that includes 6+ years of pavement engineering research, 3 years of industry, and 4+ years of teaching experience. He was involved in completing three major research projects as a lead researcher covering all three areas of pavement engineering – materials, management, and design. His meticulous work helped state agencies develop methodologies to screen moisture-sensitive Hot Mix Asphalt mixes, produce decision trees to select appropriate crack sealing methods, and implement a new pavement M-E design methodology. Dr. Arepalli received a gold medal from the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, for his academic excellence in graduate studies.

Dr. Arepalli has an ongoing sponsored research project titled “Evaluation of advanced pothole patching materials and methods for bituminous pavements” from the government of India (SERB-SURE) worth Rs. 22.5 lakhs. He successfully completed two overseas-sponsored research projects in collaboration with the University of Maine, USA, funded by the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT), USA, recently.
